Morningside Children's Kidney Treatment Centre
The Morningside Children’s Kidney Treatment Centre is dedicated solely to the care of children with kidney diseases. The centre is staffed by 2 specialised paediatricians, Dr. Errol Gottlich and Professor Peter Thomson, and 2 specialised sisters, Sr. Ingrid Laubscher and Sr. Megan Brown. The centre is located in the Morningside Medi-clinic and admits patients to the paediatric ward, as well as the neonatal and general ICUs. The practice also provides a consulting service to regional hospitals.
Children of all ages, from newborn to adolescents are cared for. The nature of kidney problems that are managed are vast and include congenital kidney and bladder anomalies to acquired kidney diseases. The centre is managed by Fresenius Medical Care South Africa and provides both acute and chronic haemo and peritoneal dialysis services for those patients who develop kidney failure.
The Trust also provides an outreach programme where lectures and educational services are provided to well baby clinics, parent groups and schools.
The practice offers a renal biopsy service and works in a close relationship with a paediatric surgeon, Professor Peter Beale, for children who need corrective surgical procedures. These procedures are performed at the Morningside Mediclinic.
Children who require kidney and other organ transplantation are also cared for at the centre although the actual transplants are performed at the Witwatersrand University Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg.
The KidneyBeanz Trust recognises that families faced with transplantation and dialysis experience extensive difficulties in most areas of living, including financial, psychological, educational and social constraints. The trust currently supports families and children by offering therapy (including Occupational Therapy, Counselling and Child Therapy as well as Dietetics), transport, phone grants, clothing and food vouchers where needed. The Trust also provides education, support and skills training in preparation for transplantation and coping with dialysis for children and families.
Occupational Therapy is provided by Annamarie Wagner, Child Therapy by Orli Zaacks and Dietetic services by Lauri Isserow. For further information on these services, please click on the individual links.
